VOO has been using optical fibre for years at the heart of its fixed network that criss-crosses Wallonia and Brussels. It is thanks to the combination of optical fibre and coaxial cable that we will already be able to guarantee up to 1 Giga per second to half of our customers by the end of 2023.

1 GIGA per second
Up to 1 GIGA per second is already available throughout Brussels and will also be rolled out for half of all households in Wallonia by the end of the year. And all of this is possible without any work at your home thanks to our HFC network, which offers incredible speeds with your coaxial cable.
- What is optical fibre exactly?
It is a glass fibre that can transmit data over long distances at the speed of light. Optical fibre guarantees a symmetrical high speed and almost zero latency. The VOO network consists of more than 9,000 km of fibre in Wallonia and Brussels, including in rural areas. Mindblowing figures, and more is to come.
- Fibre and coaxial cable: how does it work?
Today, VOO uses optical fibre up to the amplifier in your street. Then, for the last few metres that separate us from you, we use coaxial cable (previously known as TV cable). Over the years, we have upgraded our infrastructure to DOCSIS 3.1, so that we can guarantee up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) on the existing cable. This means that we bring fibre speed to your home with a high quality coaxial cable, as it can carry both digital TV and internet.
- Cable or optical fibre? Why choose when you can have it all!
By combining fibre at the core of our network with an excellent coaxial cable to your home, we can already deliver 1 Gbps, which is 10 times faster than VDSL. And all this without having to carry out any work on your street, road or facade. And your coaxial cable can go even higher, up to 10 Gbps with the upcoming DOCSIS 4.0 standard. All that is possible thanks to our hybrid network (HFC). With the VOO network, the top speeds are guaranteed for many years to come.
50% of customers will be able to surf at 1 Giga per second by the end of 2023. That means one new GIGA address every two minutes.
When can I have optical fibre installed at my address?
The VOO network currently uses a combination of coaxial cable and optical fibre. This technology, known as HFC, enables us to guarantee you fast GIGA speeds without making any changes to your current installation. The 1 Gbps speed is already available throughout Brussels and will be available to 50% of Walloons by the end of 2023. No work, no drilling, just a new modem in your home. In the future, we will continue to make huge investments in our network to increase the speed without changing your current cable: we are talking up to 10 Gbps.

Frequently Asked Questions
- I’ve received a Unifiber or Proximus fibre offer. What should I do?
This network is not compatible with VOO fibre. However, we can guarantee that with VOO fibre and the coaxial cable, we will be able to reach the speeds promised by our competitors’ fibre network very quickly. Continued investment will be made in our fibre and coaxial (HFC) network over the next 10 years, at least.
- I already have GIGA via VOO: can you do any better?
Yes, our HFC network will continue to evolve. With the introduction of a new DOCSIS 4.0 standard, we will be able to deliver up to 10 Gbps to your home and more than 6 Gbps upstream (upload). Another advantage: even weaker latency (for gamers). Once again, this update does not require any roadworks or work on your facade. All we need to do is replace your modem.
- Will you cover the white zones in Belgium?
Of course. VOO will offer very high-speed internet (up to 1 Gbps) not only in the cities and towns of Wallonia and Brussels, but also in the more remote rural areas. This will be the case in particular in the so-called ‘white zones’, which until now have been deprived of a fast internet connection. Our coaxial cable is already near you. And it still has some surprises in store for you.
